Thirteen runners are poised to chase black type success at Royal Randwick this weekend, following the release of 2016 Up And Coming Stakes nominations on Monday.
Prized Icon has not been seen at the races since breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in April, but has been included in 2016 Up And Coming Stakes nominations.
Debuting to racing for third in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) in October last year, Prized Icon was immediately returned to the paddock and resumed in 2016 for third in the More Than Winning Plate (1000m) at Randwick on January 23rd.
Progressing to second in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 13th, the More Than Ready colt placed third in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) on March 6th.
Running a close second in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m), Prized Icon broke through for his first race win in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) on April 9th before taking out the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) only one week later.
Former Brisbane galloper Nikitas has been transferring to the care of Chris Waller for his Spring Carnival campaign and has been included in 2016 Up And Coming Stakes nominations.
Debuting to racing for success in the Canadian Club Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on December 5th, Nikitas ran third in the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes (1200m) before finishing a close second to Capitalist in the Magic Millions 2.y.o Classic (1200m) on January 9th.
Clearly requiring a run when resuming for eighth in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) on May 14th, the Snitzel colt responded with a tough run for third in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) but was unable to come on in the late stages of the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) most recently on June 11th.
Waller is poised to be offered several chances of success in the three-year-old feature after also including Cellarman and Pound Sterling in Up And Coming Stakes nominations.
Godolphin is spoiled for choice with their plethora of talented three-year-olds currently in work and the major racing faction will be offered two good chances of black type success on Saturday after John O’Shea included both Kent and Peacock in Up And Coming Stakes nominations.
Kent is yet to line up for a black type race through his short career but is also yet to finish outside the first three; posting a win and two seconds through three appearances.
Peacock has not been seen at the races since registering his first career win in the 1st Light Horse Maiden Plate (1400m) on April 25th, but has trialled well in the lead-up to the Up And Coming Stakes.
The 2016 Up And Coming Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
