Cannyescent Ready for 2015 Up And Coming Stakes

August 20th, 2015

Cannyescent undoubtedly faces the toughest test of his short career in Saturday’s 2015 Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick, but jockey Kathy O’Hara is thrilled to have retained the ride on the three-year-old and is confident of a competitive performance.

Cannyescent has only appeared on course once competitively for Warwick Farm-based trainer Gabrielle Englebrecht, but has already more than stamped his claims as one to watch through the Spring Carnival.

Jumping from the gates well in the Australian Stockyard Co Maiden (1200m) at Goulburn on August 4th, O’Hara immediately led the Canny Lad gelding forward; settling in prime position on the heels of the race’s early leaders who set a fair tempo away from the barriers and towards the bend.

Offered a clear racing line upon arriving on the final straight, Cannyescent immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by O’Hara; mustering an impressive turn of foot to find the line close to two lengths in the clear of closest rival Arsonist.

Having also taken out a pair of talent-rich barrier trials prior to his competitive debut, O’Hara told AAP the team is unsure how Cannyescent will stack up alongside the likes of Sebring Sun and Voilier in the 2015 Up And Coming Stakes, but his work has more than warranted a berth in the field.

“In his trials and that one race he’s had, we’ve been fairly soft on him,” O’Hara said.

“He’s never really been tested in anything that he’s done, so it’s a good test for him.

“At the moment he’s done everything right and he’s showing real potential, so Saturday will be a good tester.

“I feel like he’s going to be a nice horse, he’s quite immature still – he’ll be better next preparation.”

Charged with carrying only 56kgs, Cannyescent may need some luck in running in the 2015 Up And Coming Stakes if to figure from the somewhat awkward barrier 7, in a field of 8.
