Trainer Gary Portelli was understandably thrilled with Sebring Sun’s maiden black type success in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Randwick over the weekend, and has revealed the three-year-old will progress to the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) on August 22nd.
Jumping from the gates well, jockey Brenton Avdulla settled Sebring Sun within the talented field of eight, maintaining a good pace away from the barriers and approaching the bend.
Pressing wide upon rounding onto the final straight, the classy son of Sebring immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by Avdulla; producing an impressive turn of foot to find the line a length in the clear of closest rival Voilier.
Portelli is confident the colt is more than up to the class of the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 12th and believes the 2015 Up And Coming Stakes will figure as the next ideal point of call.
“I’ve always thought he could step up but you worry when they come up against the better horses,” Portelli said after The Rosebud.
“I think he has shown he can and he will have to if he’s going to meet horse like Vancouver in the Golden Rose.
“He will go to the Up And Coming Stakes in three weeks and then to the big race.”
Avdulla delivered a gem of a ride aboard Sebring Sun on the weekend and is also confident of a successful progression.
“He is a lovely horse,” Avdulla said.
“I had to get a bit further back than I wanted and had to time my run, but I was confident and he did what I expected.”
Running second amongst notable company in the TAB Betting Season Plate (1000m) on debut in October, Sebring Sun returned this year for a credible third behind Haptic and Counterattack in a Randwick minor over 1000m before placing fifth in each of the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) and Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m).
Having returned this time for success in the TAB.com.au Maiden (1200m) in what was his only other start prior to The Rosebud.
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early odds on all major 2015 Spring Carnival races including the Golden Rose, for which Sebring Sun can be taken at a quote of $17 for success.
The 2015 Up And Coming Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, August 19th.
