Kumaon No Certainty for 2014 Up And Coming Stakes

August 22nd, 2014

A standout performer over major two-year-old events through the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, Godolphin have revealed talented colt Kumaon is set to be removed from the field of this weekend’s Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick.

Securing a strong and consistent total of one win and three minor places from just five competitive race starts so far, Kumaon returned to the spelling paddock after running on to claim a credible third in the featured Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 26th.

Having reportedly taken well to his time away from racing and return to work, Godolphin Racing Manager Jason Walsh revealed the rain-soaked Randwick surface is likely to rule the Lonhro colt out of a return to competition this weekend.

“He is in great form and I think that he has made definite progress from his juvenile year,” Walsh said.

“He has had a couple of nice jump outs at home too and couldn’t be more pleasing.

“He worked with Earthquake on Tuesday morning and stuck right with her, but again he was in good form in the autumn in the Sires and he really disappointed on a heavy track.

“If the track stays in that kind of range he would be unlikely too.”

Winning the Schweppes Golden Gift (1100m) by a short nose on debut in December, Kumaon stamped his claims as one to watch when finishing third amongst classy company in the 2014 ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) before finishing a close second to Time For War in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on March 29th.

Unable to completely handle the wet when sixth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in his only other start prior to the Champagne Stakes, Kumaon is one of two Godolphin trained runners included in the final field for the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes, with Meursault (barrier 9) likely to retain his position.

Leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best odds on the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes, for which Kumaon is still included at generous odds of $11 for success, or $2.85 to run a place.
