Aiming to continue his so-far perfect career start in the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick this weekend, Godolphin are confident exciting three-year-old Meursault has the skill and class to overcome what is likely to be a bogged racing surface.
Pleasing over four strong barrier trials prior to his racing debut, Meursault has been confirmed to target the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 13th, and will take a huge leap towards figuring as a leading contender with a polished run in what will be his maiden black type race this weekend.
Allocated the wide and somewhat awkward barrier 9 for the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes, Godolphin Racing Manager Jason Walsh conceded this weekend’s Group 3 will be a huge test for the Medaglia D’Oro colt, but is in pleasing condition.
“We think that he is a really talented colt with a really nice future,” Walsh said.
“You have to be very good to jump from that sort of grade straight into Stakes class.
“We are very pleased with him at home and he gives the impression that he will appreciate up to a mile and maybe even further.
“It will be a good test for him up in grade.”
Jumping from the gates well in his only competitive race start so far, Meursault settled in prime position of the leaders in the 2014 Claret Stakes (1300m) at Hawkesbury; breaking clear of the pack to finish three lengths in the clear of his nearest rival.
Leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early odds for the 2014 Golden Rose Stakes, for which Meursault is available at a generous quote of $13 for success; a figure which is likely to decrease dramatically should he be successful this weekend.
Confirmed alongside ten other three-year-old runners including classy stable mate Kumaon, Meursault is currently available at odds of $5.50 for success in the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes.
