Thirteen three-year-old have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick, highlighted by several notable performers over the 2014 racing calendar so far.
Charging home to secure an impressive victory over classy competition in the Listed Rosebud (1200m) last time out, trainer Paul Messara has nominated Scissor Kick for the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes.
Disappointing when beating just a single runner home in the Australian Turf Club Maiden (1200m) on debut in March, Scissor Kick has returned to racing in impeccable condition this time in, strolling home to win the More Than Ready 2.y.o (1250m) first-up before comfortably winning The Rosebud by close to a length over fellow Up And Coming Stakes nominee Better Land last time out.
Likely to progress to the featured Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) following the Up And Coming Stakes, Messara is confident of another polished performance from the Redoute’s Choice colt this weekend.
Initially underlining the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) on August 30th as the next point of call for the exciting three-year-old, trainer Peter Moody has instead opted to nominate Better Land for the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes.
Charging home to win the Turnbull Plumbing Plate (1100m) by more than three lengths on debut on April 6th, Better Land proved he is well and truly up to the standard of top-level three-year-olds when finished second in the Rosebud.
Trainer Chris Waller is set to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes, having nominated classy stable mates Hero I Am and Idyllic Scenery.
Beginning his racing career abroad in New Zealand, Hero I Am finished a disappointing sixth in the Listed Matamata Slipper (1200m) on debut on February 22nd before breaking through for a maiden race win in the Retox Sports Bar Maiden (1200m) and finishing a credible seventh in the Group 1 Oaks Stud Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on March 29th.
Finishing fifth in The Rosebud, his first appearance in Australia, Waller is confident the Hussonet colt will be far better for his first-up performance this weekend.
Claiming one win and one minor place form his three competitive starts so far, Idyllic Scenery will without doubt face his biggest test to date in the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes, but has reportedly taken well to his return to work.
Godolphin arguably appear the greatest chance of success in the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes, having nominated both Meursault and Kumaon for the Randwick Group 3.
Jogging home to win the Claret Stakes (1300m) by more than three lengths in his only competitive appearance so-far, Meursault is currently seventh favourite for success in early markets for the 2014 Golden Rose.
A standout performer over major two-year-old events through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Kumaon finished second in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) first-up before finishing sixth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and third in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) last time out on April 26th.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
