The Group Three Up And Coming Stakes (1200m) lit up Sydney’s Warwick Farm Racecourse, when it ran as a feature on the thrilling Warwick Stakes Day.
Regarded as a staple day during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, punters at Sportsbet had plenty to select from when it came to the 2010 Up And Coming Stakes – and it was the outsider which pulled through.
Few would have backed Blackball – the lightly raced colt – to have claimed the victory against a quality field of three-year-old males. But the Peter Snowden-trained starter did.
Starting from barrier 12, champion hoop Tye Angland guided his mount to perfection – embracing the width for the majority of the race. The duo was the widest running pair in the turn onto the straight and powered home to win by a half-neck.
Buffering was stunning in his second-place finish. The Mossman gelding had started from the widest alley and sat off the pace for most of the 2010 Up And Coming Stakes, only to lose in the closing stages.
Sea Lord back in third was another gallant runner. The 2010 Up And Coming Stakes marked the three-year-olds second career start, and could be one to watch this spring at SportsBet.
Decision Time headed into the race as the favourite at SportsBet, and while up against a smart emerging field of three-year-olds, could not prove his worth to keen punters.
Also taking place on Saturday at Warwick Farm was the headlining Group Two Warwick Stakes (1400m) which saw Metal Bender take the win, and the Group Three Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) where stablemate to Blackball – Parables finished first.
If you would like to follow any of the runners’ spring campaigns head to SportsBet. Blackball is set to start on September 4 once more in the Listed Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m), with Buffering jumping a week later in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1200m).
